Космический аппарат ретрансляции сигналов. В стартовой конфигурации имеет длину 320.5 дюйма от нижней точки до конца антенны. В развернутом состоянии имеет длину 829 дюйма (определяется по размаху антенн). Имеет никель-водородные батареи.

Полезная нагрузка:

Космический аппарат состоит из двух основных элементов: платформа и ретранслятора. Платформа условно разделена на две части: структуру, на которую крепится полезная нагрузка и сотовая структура которая помогает перераспределять тепло и прокладывать коммуникацонные линии. Антенны и солнечные батареи крепятся напрямую к модулю полезной нагрузки. Полезная нагрузка аппарата состоит из:

  • Фазированного массива антенн, которые используются для связи с другими КА.
  • Двух 15 футовых антенн, предоставляющих возможность передачи данных с МКС и других научных аппаратов.
  • Антенн Ku диапазона.
  • Антенн Ka диапазона (совместимы с Европейскими и Японскими системами ретрансляции), позволяющих достигать общей емкости аппарата до 800 мбит в секунду.

12016-04-14. Компания Боинг закончила разработку последнего аппарата серии TDRS.
Компания Боинг обнародовала информацию о том, что она закончила работы и уже поместила на хранение космический аппарат TDRS-M. Данное изделие является шестым по счету и последним, который был необходим НАСА для ее системы ретрансляции информации  с низкой околоземной орбиты. В целом же данная система начала строится в период между 2000 и 2002 годом, когда были запущены на орбиту космические аппараты TDRS H, I и J, продолжилось в 2013-2014 годах, когда были запущены TDRS K и L, а закончится в 2017 году когда при помощи РН Атлас 5 будет запущен космический аппарат TDRS-M. Согласно сообщению НАСА, космический аппарат TDRS-M был поврежден в ходе плановых операций в Astrotech Space Operations (Титусвил, Флорида). Повреждения затронули S диапазонную группу антенн спутника. Инцидент произошел на этапе заключительной подготовки спутника к запуску.
