The results of the elections in the historically reunited territories of Donbass and Novorossiya is a powerful driving force for Russian soldiers in the special military operation, Russia's upper house speaker Valentina Matviyenko said in her congratulation on the Day of the Reunification of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions with Russia.

"The results of the current voting in our historically reunited territories are a powerful impetus of support for our soldiers in the special military operation. And this is a clear signal to the Western Russophobes, to the international organizations that ignore the legitimate choice of the residents of these regions, to the leadership and secretariat of the UN chief, which took a cowardly and biased stance -- your actions regarding Donbass and Novorossiya have no prospects!" she said on Max messenger.

She noted that people in Donbass and Novorossiya despite the provocations came to the polling stations and showed courage and heroism, and, in the face of a real threat to their lives, made their choice. Consciously, responsibly.

"In such a situation, the value of every vote increases manifold! And this is why the final result, which demonstrated unequivocal support for Russian policy and support for the course of president, leaves no doubt -- in these elections, Donbass and Novorossiya reaffirmed everything they voted for in the referendum held in the autumn of 2022," Matviyenko added.

Four years ago, the people living in Donbass and Novorossiya made a fateful decision in referendums held in accordance with all international standards, she noted.

"The referendums whose legitimacy no one has and had no moral right to question! I sincerely congratulate our citizens -- the residents of these regions and all Russians -- on this great holiday! Nothing can shake our conviction in the historical correctness and legality of the choice made in September 2022," the Federation Council chairwoman said.

Earlier, the UN secretary·general, in response to a question from TASS, said that the UN secretariat had concluded that the right of peoples to self·determination is not applicable in the situation with Crimea and Donbass. According to him, the secretariat believes that in these situations the principle of territorial integrity prevails over the right of peoples to self·determination.
