AIMATICS, an AI-based video recognition company, said on Oct. 16 it plans to expand its driver scoring system to freight transport operators, beyond existing applications in tanker trucks and ready-mix concrete vehicles.
AIMATICS' driver scoring system records risky driving behavior through video and data, issues real-time warnings and provides customized training based on individual safety scores. The system is a video telematics solution that combines real-time footage from vehicle-mounted cameras with conventional telematics data, including GPS tracking and sensor readings, to visually monitor vehicle operations and driver behavior.
AIMATICS said its solution differs from other video telematics and driver monitoring systems (DMS) in its capabilities after detecting risky behavior through video recognition. The system supports continuous monitoring and management until drivers improve their driving habits.
AIMATICS' AI cameras monitor the driver and the road ahead, issuing real-time alerts when they detect drowsy driving, mobile phone use, distracted driving or traffic signal violations. Video footage of these incidents is automatically transmitted to the company's aid monitoring platform. After each trip, the system calculates safety scores and rankings for individual drivers, allowing managers to analyze risky behaviors and monthly scoring trends, identify high-risk drivers and provide customized training.
AIMATICS said the system's effectiveness was demonstrated in a project conducted with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA). In the 2024 AI Video-Based Bus Safe Driving Monitoring Project, which used aid's driver scoring function for safety training, drowsy driving incidents fell 99.7%, from 1.54 to 0.005 per 1,000 kilometers driven.
Other risky driving behaviors also declined sharply, including distracted driving, down 93.4%; traffic signal violations, down 87.6%; crossing the centerline, down 46.9%; and smoking, down 41.4%. The monitoring project involved 500 vehicles and 1,808 drivers from 13 bus operators.
AIMATICS has also supplied the system for Sampyo Industry's ready-mix concrete trucks and tanker trucks operated by a global hazardous materials transportation company. It is currently discussing adoption with several freight operators, including major logistics companies, as it seeks to expand supply to the freight transportation sector.
"Freight trucks frequently operate over long distances and at night, increasing the likelihood and risks of drowsy driving," an AIMATICS official said. "While digital tachographs (DTGs) provide driving data such as speeding and sudden deceleration, transport operators have limited ways to monitor drivers' conditions." The company said its system could help address these monitoring gaps.
The system uses AIMATICS' proprietary AI engine, aimNet, along with technology that alters drivers' faces and voices.
According to AIMATICS, aimNet has been deployed in more than 520,000 vehicles and trained on driving data equivalent to approximately 3,500 years. The engine is also used in AIM-T1, the company's factory exterior inspection equipment, as AIMATICS gradually expands its vehicle-focused video recognition technology into manufacturing applications.
AIMATICS said its face and voice modification technology allows operators to manage driving records and safety scores without identifying individuals, reducing privacy concerns associated with in-cabin cameras. Modified files cannot be restored to their original form.
Video analysis is performed directly within the camera using on-device AI, making it independent of network connectivity. AIMATICS said the technology can be deployed at low cost. "The system operates smoothly on chips costing around 20,000 won without requiring expensive GPUs, enabling deployment across thousands of commercial vehicles at relatively low cost," the company said.
