The Russian military satellite “Kosmos-2612” carried out a series of orbital maneuvers and approached the ICEYE-X36 radar satellite operated by the Finnish-American company ICEYE. As the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reports, the approach began as early as late September, when the Russian spacecraft corrected its orbit and gradually reached the same altitude as the Western satellite. According to calculations by the “Orbital Radar” service, the minimum distance may have been only 26 meters.
ICEYE-X36 belongs to a group of radar satellites capable of capturing images of the Earth’s surface at night and through cloud cover. The company works with the Ukrainian armed forces and provides satellite data for reconnaissance and surveillance. American analysts view the actions of “Kosmos-2612” as a demonstration of Russia’s ability to approach foreign spacecraft. At the same time, there is no confirmation of an attempt to collide with or damage the satellite, or to use anti-satellite weapons. According to the specialist publication Ars Technica, the Russian spacecraft moved away again after remaining near ICEYE-X36 for an extended period.
Western satellites have long been an important part of the reconnaissance infrastructure that supplies the Ukrainian armed forces with information. It is now becoming clear that these devices themselves can also come under close observation. To demonstrate Russia’s technical capabilities, it was not even necessary to destroy anything—it was enough to move closer.
