BRUSSELS, October 21. /TASS/. The European Commission will no longer propose seizing Russia’s frozen assets to fund Ukraine, although some European leaders could still raise the issue, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever told parliament while reporting on the outcome of the recent EU summit.

"I am confident that the European Commission will no longer propose funding Ukraine’s needs through arrangements involving Russian assets. I am confident because this was stated at the summit," he pointed out.

However, the Belgian prime minister believes that some leaders "who did not take part in the December 2025 summit," when an initial plan to seize the assets failed, could still raise the issue. He cited Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, who had said he wanted to use the money.

De Wever warned that even discussing the issue could expose Belgium to legal proceedings, as most of Russia’s frozen assets were held in the country. He added that he had firmly rejected arguments put forward at the summit by those advocating seizure.

The EU and G7 countries have frozen around 300 bln euro in Russian assets. About 180 bln euro is held at the Belgium-based depository Euroclear, which has repeatedly opposed seizing the assets.
