Considerations for Using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire

Дата публикации: 01-08-2026 00:00:00

To the Editor The Viewpoint on the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) provides an important discussion for using this widespread developmental screening measure in research. We agree with the authors on many points. Most importantly, studies must describe ASQ limitations as a parental report and nondiagnostic screening tool designed to inform early intervention referrals. However, we would like to acknowledge several additional points. We believe that ASQ data used in clinical practice can be thoughtfully assessed as an outcome that does not necessarily lead to misleading, unhelpful, or harmful results. The ASQ is often readily accessible retrospectively for large populations in the clinical setting, whereas performance-based developmental assessments are not. For example, ASQ data have been an important way to understand pandemic effects on development, including through its intended purpose as a developmental screener.
