Juici Patties

They say good things come in threes, and here’s hoping that’s true for good meals when three new Jamaican restaurants open soon in the greater Boston area. The founder of Juici Patties first started selling Jamaican patties—pastries stuffed with spiced meats—in his parents’ grocery store before opening his first restaurant in Jamaica in 1980. The franchise has since expanded into America, dishing out patties and other goodies like plantains and coco bread, a slightly sweet bread made with coconut milk. Three locations are breezing into the Bay State, coming to Brockton’s Westgate Mall, Nubian Square in Roxbury, and the Gateway Center shopping center in Everett. Keep an eye on Instagram for when the locations open.

Pomona

This new café and wine bar in East Boston pulls inspiration from all over. It’s at once a nod to Swampscott—where a more formal Pomona cafe exists, run under different ownership—plus further afield, from the Mediterranean (as the namesake is an ancient Roman deity) to Colombia and across Latin America. The daytime coffee program leans into bold Colombian brews and brunch favorites like shakshuka, pancakes, and feasts of brioche French toast. Come evening, savor small plates of Peruvian ceviche and garlicky mussels, with flatbreads, casseroles, and a handful of salads and entrees, including gouda-stuffed salmon with asparagus and garlic cream sauce. All this within a gleaming, tiled space that invites hours-long hangouts.

Falafel from Thelo Mediterranean. Thelo Mediterranean

The team behind the Avenue Grill in Dorchester sets a course for different waters with their new restaurant, Thelo Mediterranean, which just opened next door on Dorchester Ave. Sail in for fresh and house-made Mediterranean-inspired dishes, from the familiar—chicken and pork gyros—to the delicious yet less common, like the comforting chicken, lemon, and rice soup called avgolemono. Find favorite mezze, too, from falafel with crispy outsides and soft interiors for dipping in herby hummus, to stuffed grape leaves and olive-oil-drizzled feta. Pick up platters of grilled meats, plus quinoa bowls and more for takeout, or tuck in at one of the handful of tables and the window-facing counter to dine within the bright dining room.

Open now (August)

860 Dorchester Ave., Dorchester

Two Pence Market

Here’s banking on the fact that you’re looking for a new morning pick-me-up spot. The team behind Milton’s Steel & Rye just opened a new specialty café and all-day market within a restored 1929-built historic bank in Milton Village. Pop in for fresh bagels, bagel sandwiches, and coffees in the morning, then peruse the prepared foods and pantry sections for dinner. Specialty groceries, seasonal produce, and wines—stored in an old bank vault—are on offer, too. Plus, put your money on wanting to stroll up to the walk-up window and order some Toscanini’s ice cream. If you’re not in a rush, gather for a while at the interior tables, surrounded by artifacts from the building’s past.

Nomu pop up at Greco. – GrecoBonus: Nomu Pop Up at Greco Newbury Street

Matcha and Greek doughnuts might just be the sweet summer combo you’re looking for. Head to the Newbury Street location of fast-casual Greek restaurant, Greco, for a special collaboration with new matcha popup Nomu, which serves ceremonial-grade matcha sourced from Japan, along with scratch-made syrups. Nomu will serve their classic matcha and also two specials: Yiayia’s matcha latte with Oreos, merenda (a chocolate-hazlenut spread), and powdered sugar, plus the truly Greek latte, with matcha, and a syrup of honey, walnut, and cinnamon. The matchas come with loukoumades, or Greek doughnuts, skewered on the straw.

Event details: 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday August 23.
