Brooks Koepka made a mockery of Bethpage Black's fearsome reputation by firing a relentless and brilliant 63 to take the early lead at the 101st USPGA Championship on seven under par.

Koepka has won three of the last seven majors he's played in and looks the hot favourite to take the glory here after such a staggering start, where he beat playing partner Tiger Woods by all of nine shots.

But there is still three rounds to go and plenty of time for the field to catch up, and Danny Lee nearly matched him late in the day with a 64, and England's Tommy Fleetwood is not too far back on three under. 

Another Englishman, Matt Wallace, is ready to pounce on one under, as are big guns Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Jason Day.

But Rory McIlroy, Woods and Francesco Molinari have it all to do after poor opening rounds, all three sitting way back on two over.
