PORTLAND — It was a confident statement from Alex Martin. But after the night he and David Gomes had Friday night, it would also be a difficult one to argue.

“Me and him in the backfield, I think we might be the best running backs in Maine,” he said.

Martin, a senior, and Gomes, a sophomore, ran for over 300 yards and accounted for four touchdowns as Portland defeated Windham 39-13 in a matchup between the three-time Class A North champion and an opponent expected to be a top challenger for the throne.

On Friday, the Bulldogs (3-0) showed just how hard they will be to catch.

“We really locked in on what we needed to do,” Martin said. “It was the game of the week. Everyone was talking about it.”

The Eagles fell to 1-2, but have a chance, coach Matt Perkins said, to prove their toughness in the coming weeks.

“Whatever could go wrong went wrong,” he said. “That’s part of the young guys on the field trying to figure it out, and then getting away from technique, trying to be a hero and trying to do too much. That’s just part of the growing pains right now.”

• Portland, ranked third in the Varsity Maine poll, didn’t cash in on a Maddox Meas interception that ended Windham’s first drive, but the Bulldogs struck after the Eagles went three-and-out on their second possession, as Martin ran in from 4 yards for a 7-0 lead with 6:33 left in the first quarter.

• Windham answered two drives later with Tegan Perkins’ 1-yard run to make it 7-6, two plays after Patrick Davenport hit Dre O’Neil for 29 yards on third-and-20. But Gomes ran 6 yards for a score on the next drive, then caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Reece Wildes on a deep in-cut for a 23-6 lead with 13.5 seconds left in the half.

“I’m usually just playing running back. They asked me to go out there and play the H. I just did what they wanted me to do,” Gomes said. “They trusted me there to catch the ball.”

• Portland put the game away in the second half, with Martin scoring on a 14-yard run on the Bulldogs’ first drive and Quinn Derrig returning an interception 20 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing possession to make it 36-6.

• Windham’s Ronin Rotaru (3-yard run) and Portland’s Justin Bouchard (25-yard field goal) finished the scoring.

Martin and Gomes ran wild with the ball in their hands, combining for 313 yards.

“(They) have really created kind of like a Pony Express situation for our team,” coach Dylan Rottkov said. “I’m not sure if we envisioned that, but it’s kind of worked out that way. They’re running the ball phenomenal right now.”

Rottkov said the two have complementing styles.

“Alex is as instinctual of a football player as they come. He knows when to cut, he knows when to lower his shoulder, knows how to make guys miss,” Rottkov said. “It’s crazy to think (Gomes) might have 30 more high school football games. He’s a lot of fun to watch out there.”

While Gomes and Martin also led a stifling Portland pass rush along with Dominic Huntington, senior Will Lukoki was one of the Bulldogs’ most disruptive defenders throughout the night.

He had a run stuff on the second drive to help force a punt, another on the next drive to help lead to a missed field goal, and pressured Davenport into a third-down incompletion that was negated by a roughing the passer penalty.
