Christopher Salamone ran for three touchdowns in the second half, and South Portland made a goal-line stand in the closing seconds to secure a 20-13 comeback victory over Scarborough in a Class A South football game Friday night in Scarborough.

Scarborough (0-3) led 13-0 after Mitch McGarry anticipated a pass into the flat, picked it off and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter.

Salamone, though, began South Portland’s comeback with a 53-yard run. In the fourth quarter, Salamone went up the middle for a 35-yard TD, and Christian Beausang’s second successful extra point gave the Red Riots (1-2) a 14-13 lead.

Salamone then scored on a 6-yard run with 2:24 remaining. South Portland went for a 2-point conversion in an attempt to take a two-score lead, but the pass was incomplete.

That gave the Red Storm one more chance, and they quickly moved into South Portland territory. After a pass interference penalty set up first-and-goal at the 4, Scarborough was stopped at the 1 on back-to-back plays. On third down with 15 seconds to go, an illegal procedure penalty pushed the ball back to the 6. Quarterback Oscar Goss was then tackled at the 1 after scrambling out of the pocket, and Scarborough couldn’t stop the clock because it was out of timeouts.

The only touchdown in the first half was on the opening drive. Scarborough held the ball for more than 10 minutes before Evan Moore scored on a 2-yard run.

NOBLE 48, SANFORD 8: Mark LaPointe threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores to lift the Knights (2-1) to a win over the Spartans (0-3) in North Berwick.

LaPointe threw a 52-yard pass to Alec Hale and a 21-yard pass to Bryson McCormack in the first quarter to give Noble a 14-0 lead. He scored on a 14-yard run in the second quarter and an 11-yard run in the third.

Tristan Miniutti added two touchdown runs and Griffin Ivey scored on a 6-yard run.

Adam Cote Jr. scored on a 6-yard run and rushed for the conversion for Sanford.

BIDDEFORD 26, MORSE 8: Ernie Dore threw two touchdown passes to Estevao Lembissa in the first quarter to help the Tigers improve to 3-0 with a win over the Shipbuilders (2-1) in Bath.

Dore and Lembissa connected on passes of 44 and 20 yards. Dore also threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Bergeron in the second quarter and Trey Coleman scored on a 37-yard run in the fourth for Biddeford.

Dylan Root scored on a 3-yard run and rushed for the 2-point conversion for Morse.

GREELY 33, WELLS 14: Luke Piper rushed for four touchdown and passed for another, leading the Rangers (2-1) past the Warriors (2-1) in Wells.

Piper opened the scoring on Greely’s first play from scrimmage after the Rangers stopped Wells on downs. The senior quarterback raced 62 yards for the only points in the first quarter.

Wells running back Quinn Finemore sandwiched two second-quarter touchdown runs around Piper’s second TD. Finemore first scored on a 5-yard run, and after Greely regained the lead on a Piper 7-yard run, Finemore went 12 yards off right tackle on a counter play to make it 14-12 at halftime.

Piper put the Rangers back in front with a 39-yard run in the third quarter. In the fourth, he threw a 12-yard TD pass to Jackson Justice, then raced 91 yards for a final score on the first play after Justice stopped a Wells drive with an interception.

LEAVITT 51, YORK 0: The Hornets (3-0) raced to a 29-0 lead after one quarter and dominated the Wildcats (0-3) in a Class C game in York.

Leavitt struck quickly, as Landon Reny broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage.

Reny then caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Landon Marquis, and Jeremiah McKenzie ran for the 2-point conversion.

The lead grew to 22-0 when Marquis connected with Wyatt Henderson for a 20-yard TD. Moments later, Leavitt added another touchdown after an interception by Jamison L’Italien.

Touchdown runs of 1 yard by Nathan Karkos and 27 yards by McKenzie in the second quarter made it 45-0.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 36, TELSTAR 8: Matt Charron rushed for two touchdowns in the first quarter and passed for two more in the second, leading the Seagulls (3-0) to an eight-man Small Division win over the Rebels (1-2) in Old Orchard Beach.

Charron started the scoring with a 2-yard run, then made it 14-0 with a 76-yard run.

In the second quarter, he hit Evan Moody for a 15-yard TD and then threw to Jackson Stanton for a 12-yard score.

Brayden Koelker added a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He also rushed for two 2-point conversions.

MARSHWOOD 32, GORHAM 12: Greg Castoras rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Hawks (3-0) defeat the Rams (0-3) in Gorham.

Michael Sbrizza connected with Gavin Villineau for a 53-yard touchdown catch and added a rushing TD. Villineau had three catches for 102 yds.

SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 46, LAKE REGION 14: Owen Kelvey ran for 223 yards and four touchdowns, and caught a touchdown pass from Dylan Jewett to lead the Phoenix (2-1) past the Lakers (1-2) in Jay. 

Jewett was 5 for 9 passing for 206 yards and two touchdowns, and Albert Belanger added a 31-yard touchdown run for Spruce Mountain. 

Blake Kirk caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Braydan Wilson and Jayden Cote ran 10 yards for a score for Lake Region.
