Pet owners nationwide are being urged to check their freezers and fridges after a raw dog food was recalled over fears it could be contaminated with salmonella.

An Indiana-based dog food company, Albright's Raw Pet Food, is recalling one of its most popular products over fears it has been contaminated with salmonella - a bacteria that can cause pets to vomit.

The specific product Albright's has recalled is its chicken recipe for dogs with an expiration date of April 28, 2027. 

The recalled pouches were distributed to consumers nationwide and to a small number of retailers in Massachusetts, California, South Carolina, North Carolina, Wisconsin and New York. 

Customers also bought it directly online on the brand's website.

The company is asking that pet owners throw away any contaminated batches and destroy it in a way that children, pets and wildlife can't eat it. 

No pets or humans have gotten sick yet from these Albright's products, but testing is still pending. Albright's reassured customers that they remain 'committed to producing safe, high-quality, biologically appropriate pet food.'

'We will continue to update our customers and partners as more information becomes available,' Albright's added.

This specific Albright's pet food is sold raw and has no artificial ingredients. 

Even on the packaging there are 'safe handling instructions' for buyers, warning that the dog food may have bacteria that could lead to illness if it isn't frozen then thawed in a refrigerator.

'If pet does not eat all presented food within 30 minutes, discard or refrigerate up to 24 hours,' the warning adds. 

Pets infected with salmonella can have worrying symptoms like lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite and abdominal pain. 

Other pets may show no symptoms at all, but can still shed salmonella in their saliva and spread it to other pets and even humans. And for humans, the bacteria can be fatal. 

Salmonella bacteria invade and destroy the cells that line a person's intestines. This makes it hard for the body to absorb water, which can result in stomach cramps. 

In life-threatening yet rare cases, salmonella can lead to infections in the brain, bones, joints, heart lining or urinary system.

This could lead to severe complications like meningitis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis or even sepsis. Severe complications are most dangerous for vulnerable people, like young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

In these cases, patients need intravenous antibiotics, fluids and close medical monitoring to fight the infection and prevent life-threatening organ failure.

This pet food product is just the latest in a long string of recalls linked to salmonella.

John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. announced it would voluntarily recall its snack mix products flavored with a possibly contaminated seasoning thanks to dry milk powder. 

The dry milk powder has been involved in several other product recalls, including Ghirardelli chocolates and Utz's Zapp's and Dirty potato chips.

Even retail giants like Walmart and Aldi recalled their frozen pizzas because of the same ingredient.
