News: Hornets Host Launch Of Dementia Friendly Accreditation

Дата публикации: 05-10-2026 14:04:33

Organisations from across Watford came together at Vicarage Road for the launch of the Dementia Friendly Hertfordshire Accreditation.
The scheme, which is run by Memory Support Herts, provides a practical framework designed to help organisations become more welcoming, accessible and inclusive for people living with dementia and those who support them.
The accreditation is about building on the fantastic work already happening in Watford.
There is already a commitment locally to supporting people affected by dementia, in which the club and our Community, Sports and Education Trust are delighted to play our part, and the accreditation provides an opportunity to recognise that work, strengthen it further and encourage more organisations to get involved.
A key part of the launch was looking at the evidence and lived experience behind the accreditation.
Research and guidance consistently highlight the importance of people living with dementia being able to maintain choice and control, dignity and respect, independence, connection and participation in everyday life.
The research also highlights why creating inclusive communities matters.
The presentation shared findings from the IDEAL Programme (the largest study of living well with dementia in Great Britain which began in 2014), which indicate that around one in three people living with dementia experience loneliness, alongside an Alzheimer’s Society survey in which 56 per cent of people with dementia surveyed said they were losing touch with people following their diagnosis.
These findings help reinforce that being dementia friendly is about much more than dementia awareness alone.
It is about enabling people to continue doing the things that matter to them, stay connected to other people, contribute to their communities and have a voice in their own lives. The Dementia Friendly Hertfordshire Accreditation has been shaped by this evidence and lived experience, alongside local priorities, the Hertfordshire Dementia Strategy, local partners and learning from previous dementia-friendly approaches.
It takes those bigger principles and translates them into practical things organisations can consider in their everyday work through 29 questions across five key areas:
Increasing understanding, building staff knowledge and awareness
Being inclusive, creating opportunities for people to engage and take part
Being accessible, making spaces easier to navigate and use
Communicating clearly, providing clearer information and communication
Working together, learning, connecting and collaborating locally
Rather than expecting organisations to make significant changes overnight, the accreditation is about recognising what is already working and identifying realistic, practical steps that could make an even greater difference.
A key message from the launch was that creating a dementia-friendly community cannot be achieved by one organisation alone.
People living with dementia, carers, businesses, community groups, sports clubs, voluntary organisations, health services and local authorities all have a part to play.
The club and Trust have completed the accreditation for both the stadium and the Meriden Community Centre.
If you or a loved one are living with dementia and need additional support from the club to attend matches, please contact disabled.supporters@watfordfc.com with your details, and one of our team will call to discuss how we can help.
Running every week during term time in the Sensory Room at Vicarage Road, the Trust’s Golden Memories programme provides guests with the opportunity to come together in a safe space, to meet others and build friendships.
The free, 90-minute sessions include a range of appropriate cognitive stimulation and physical health activities, as well as themed events.
Sessions also work with local healthcare professionals to provide a respite area for carers, including support for their needs and local signposting.
