Jaguar Type 01: The $130,000 Electric Gamble That Could Save or Sink a British Icon

Дата публикации: 07-10-2026 21:02:13

Jaguar has unveiled the Type 01, its first new model after a two-year production halt and controversial rebrand. The $130,500 electric four-door GT delivers over 1,000 hp, up to 400 miles of range and a radical design that keeps the drama of the 2024 Type 00 concept intact. This high-stakes luxury EV will test whether the British marque can succeed at double its former prices.

Two years ago Jaguar stopped selling cars. The British marque pulled its entire lineup from showrooms, idled factories and bet everything on a radical reinvention. On Tuesday night in New York the company finally showed its hand. The result is the Type 01, a four-door electric grand tourer that looks nothing like any Jaguar before it.

At 5.2 metres long and two metres wide the car barely fits in many British parking spaces. It has no rear window. Thin headlights sit at the edges of a wide grille. The long bonnet sweeps back to a low roofline just 1.4 metres high. A deployable rear fender and hidden full-width lights complete a shape that stops conversations. Jaguar calls the design exuberant modernism. Critics have called it everything from bold to bizarre.

Digital Trends first reported that the outrageous Type 00 concept shown in 2024 was no bluff. The production Type 01 carries over the vast majority of that dramatic silhouette. Jaguar kept its promise. The car that emerges in 2027 will look almost exactly like the one that sparked endless online debate.

Rawdon Glover, Jaguar managing director, stood in front of the finished vehicle and declared the brand’s return. “Jaguar’s back,” he told Dezeen at the launch. He insisted the vehicle was designed as a Jaguar first. The electric powertrain came second. That order matters. Jaguar wants buyers to feel emotion before they notice zero emissions.

The numbers underneath are serious. Three electric motors produce up to 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm of torque. Zero to 62 mph takes 3.2 seconds. The sprint from 62 to 112 mph requires another four seconds. Jaguar highlights that overtaking pull because it speaks to the grand tourer mission. This car is built for fast highway runs more than stoplight battles.

A 118 kWh usable battery sits inside an 850-volt architecture. Jaguar projects an EPA range of up to 400 miles. WLTP estimates reach 450 miles. Even at sustained highway speeds the car should deliver 320 miles. Add 200 miles of range in 13 minutes on a 350 kW charger. Those figures come directly from Jaguar’s official release published Tuesday on its media site.

More than 360 patent applications support the engineering. The bespoke Jaguar Electric Architecture allows a low floor and 50-50 weight distribution. All-wheel steering shrinks the turning circle. Active vanes and a three-stage deployable spoiler achieve a drag coefficient of 0.23. Jaguar claims this is its most aerodynamic road car ever.

Inside the drama continues. A single 24-inch OLED glass panel serves the driver. A seven-inch touchscreen sits lower. No traditional rear window exists. Instead a display rises from a full-width panoramic soundbar to show the rear camera feed. Sensory audio seats and extensive aluminium trim aim to deliver the luxury expected at this price.

Pricing starts at $130,500 in North America and £130,000 in Britain. That represents more than double Jaguar’s recent average transaction prices. Glover made the strategy clear in multiple interviews. “It’s really important that we put Jaguar back on a more solid financial footing,” he said according to The Guardian. Toiling in the volume premium segment for two decades had become unsustainable.

The company targets wealthy buyers in the United States first. Young tech professionals in California and on the East Coast sit at the center of the plan. North America will become Jaguar’s largest market. The UK and Germany follow. China arrives before decade’s end. Jaguar will sell in far fewer countries overall. Eight or nine markets should account for 85 percent of volume.

Production begins next year at JLR’s Solihull plant. Electric drive units and battery packs come from Wolverhampton. Pressed body panels arrive from Halewood in Merseyside. Every element is designed, engineered and manufactured in Britain. Jaguar and its parent Tata Motors hope the move rebuilds pride in UK automotive capability.

But questions remain. The Type 01 measures too large for many European parking spots. Its radical looks divided opinion even before the production version appeared. The 2024 rebrand that launched with an advertisement showing no cars triggered widespread mockery. Former President Donald Trump called the concept “woke.” Nigel Farage suggested the brand deserved to fail. Jaguar kept moving forward anyway.

Now the metal is real. Orders open in early 2027. First deliveries arrive in the second half of that year. Jaguar has registered interest from around 50,000 people. A high proportion are new to the brand. Whether enough of them will pay six figures for an electric Jaguar determines the company’s future.

Competitors have moved too. Ferrari, Bentley and Mercedes have all launched or revealed luxury electric models this year. Chinese makers push harder into premium segments. Jaguar chose to leap rather than follow. It stopped selling cars for two years to create something different. The Type 01 represents that difference in steel, aluminium and electrons.

Glover knows the stakes. In conversations with WIRED he described success as establishing the new price point. Buyers must decide Jaguar is worth paying more for. The company needs certain volume to create critical mass. It will not chase lower-priced variants immediately. The Type 01 sets the tone for everything that follows.

Analysts watch closely. Jaguar once sold in 120 markets. The new strategy narrows focus to wealthy customers in select countries. Average selling prices must roughly double. The vehicle itself must deliver drama, presence and an emotional connection that electric cars often lack. Jaguar believes its history of bold moves, from the E-Type to the XJ-S, gives it permission to try.

The Type 01 carries more than 1,000 horsepower and 400 miles of range. It carries patents, British manufacturing jobs and the hopes of a 90-year-old marque. Most of all it carries the weight of a decision made two years ago to stop everything and start over. Tuesday’s unveiling in New York marked the moment that bet reached the road. The coming months will reveal whether the world buys in.

Jaguar has one shot. The car looks like nothing else. It drives with serious performance. Its price demands attention. And the brand behind it has never needed a hit more than it does now.
