A Hartford Police Department deputy chief who served the community for over two decades has died. City officials said Deputy Chief Jason Lee died after a long, brave battle with cancer.
Deputy Chief Lee joined the Hartford Police Department in 2005. “Over a distinguished career that spanned patrol operations, specialized units, investigative work, and command staff leadership, he shaped the department for the better and touched the lives of countless residents and fellow officers,” city officials said of Lee.
Hartford Police Chief James Rovella said he had the privilege or knowing Jason for 21 years and watched him progress throughout his career.
“He was someone the department could rely on in every position he held. Jason rose through the ranks, and held the titles of officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain and ultimately deputy chief. He will be deeply missed. He served the Hartford community with distinction and honor,” Chief Rovella said.
“In addition to his commitment to the City of Hartford, His greatest honor was being a loving husband and devoted father. The thoughts and prayers of the Hartford Police Department are with Jason’s family as we all grieve this tremendous loss,” he added.
Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam also released a statement about Deputy Chief Lee saying in part:
“Deputy Chief Jason Lee was a steadfast public servant who deeply loved Hartford and dedicated his life’s work to making our neighborhoods safer and stronger. His steady presence and care for this community will be profoundly missed — he was universally respected on the force, and I valued the time we spent together. On behalf of the entire City of Hartford, we extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and his brothers and sisters in the police department during this unimaginably difficult time.”
