During World War II, there was one high-flying, twin-engine, high-speed fighter plane that the Luftwaffe came to fear, so much so that they nicknamed it “The Fork-Tailed Devil.” That same plane also dominated in the Pacific Theater, achieving more air-to-air victories over Japanese aircraft than any other Allied fighter.
That plane was the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, which Luminox now honors with its aptly named P-38 Lightning 9520 Series GMT Pilot’s Watch, an affordable Swiss-made travel timepiece with a stealthy, tactical edge.
This is a stealthy reinterpretation of one of Luminox’s best pilot watches.LuminoxHigh-flying aceThe P-38 Lightning is not a new model for Luminox. However, the brand discontinued its previous editions, leaving the new 9520 series as the line’s standalone model. Still, it does share commonalities with its predecessors.
For instance, it remains a four-handed GMT travel watch that tracks two time zones at once. To that end, it features an affordable-yet-reliable Swiss-made Ronda 515.24H movement behind its dial.
The dial format is inspired by classic B-Uhr WWII military watches.LuminoxThat dial, by the way, is a historical reference in and of itself, harkening to classic B-Uhr (short for Beobachtungsuhr) watches from WWII. This can be seen in its inner 24-hour ring, around which the GMT hand travels.
But it is still a Luminox through and through, boasting the brand’s signature 25-year lume tubes on its hour markers and hands. However, this new edition also features a few noteworthy changes.
The stainless steel case is paired with an antireflective sapphire crystal.LuminoxThe most significant alteration to this new lineup is its case. While it still measures 42 millimeters in diameter and is made from 316L stainless steel, it gets a new IP finish.
Not only does that finish give the case a new, stealthy black colorway, but it also adds extra durability and toughness to the already-rugged watch. That case colorway extends across all three available configurations.
The case gets a new black IP finish on its 316L stainless steel material.LuminoxThey differ in their case colorway and included strap. There’s an all-black option (black dial, black strap), a black-and-brown combo (black dial, brown strap) and a black-and-blue combo (blue dial, black strap). Beyond their colorways, they’re all exactly the same, down to their prices.
It’s also worth mentioning that they come standard with a genuine leather strap with a matching IP black buckle. Other elements include a sapphire antireflective crystal, a screw-down crown and a 100-meter water-resistance rating.
In classic Luminox fashion, the hour markers and hands get the 25-year lume treatment.LuminoxAll three Luminox P-38 Lightning 9520 Series watches are now available on the brand’s site for $675 apiece.
