The suspect facing a murder charge in the Sept. 21 fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man in an apartment parking lot near the Las Vegas Strip may have been triggered by a sexual comment, police records show.
The grandmother of Andrew Avalos, 21, told police that she witnessed her grandson make a fist and then punch his other hand before threatening to harm Kyle Prows “because he said he was going to have sex with me,” a Metropolitan Police Department detective wrote in warrant documents. Shortly thereafter, Avalos’ grandmother said she heard multiple gunshots from a nearby apartment complex before seeing him flee the scene, the detective wrote.
Metro said police had received calls of two men arguing before several gunshots were heard near the 4600 block of Grand Drive, near East Harmon Avenue and Koval Lane.
Avalos’ grandmother told police that her grandson, who was previously diagnosed as bipolar but refused to take his medicine, was helping her unload her vehicle in the parking lot on the evening of Sept. 21 before she lost sight of him, the report stated. She then saw Avalos walk by “visibly upset” and uttering threats as Prows followed him, records stated.
The grandmother summoned Avalos’ girlfriend, hoping she could help settle him down, but as they walked toward his location at an adjacent apartment complex, they heard several gunshots, the report said. The girlfriend reportedly said “Oh my God” after seeing Prows lying on the ground before fleeing, the grandmother told police.
Another witness told detectives of hearing “one or two popping sounds” before hearing six additional gunshots and seeing a male running from the area with a gun in his hand, the report stated.
The detective wrote in the warrant that surveillance footage police obtained from the Wyndham Hotel, at 265 E. Harmon Ave., showed Avalos — matching the description provided by the witness — walking through an apartment complex before leaving the camera’s view.
Detectives said they found nine expended 9mm cartridge cases, one unspent cartridge and four bullet fragments at the crime scene.
Avalos also faces a charge of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, police said.
Court records show that Avalos pleaded guilty in 2022 to the felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm after he was arrested on suspicion of stabbing another man in the face.
