Adam Cote Jr.’s fourth touchdown of the game — a 2-yard run with 17.8 seconds remaining — gave Sanford a 44-36 win over Scarborough in a Class A South football game Saturday afternoon in Scarborough.

Scarborough (0-6) tied the game midway through the fourth quarter on a 28-yard run by Aiden Carpenter and a conversion pass from Oscar Goss to Quinncy Colvin.

After an exchange of punts, Sanford (1-5) took over at its own 34 with less than two minutes left. Cote kept the possession alive when he connected with Oakley O’Keeffe for a 39-yard gain on third-and-5. Later, on first-and-goal from the 2, he kept the ball himself, went around left end and dove into the end zone.

The teams combined for 58 points in the first half, which ended with Sanford ahead 30-28.

Cote had TD runs of 23 and 17 yards in the first quarter and 65 yards in the second.

Scarborough answered with three second-quarter touchdowns — a 39-yard pass from Goss to Brandon Brady, and scoring runs of 85 and 14 yards by Ozzie Bodah. Bodah’s first TD came immediately after an interception by Goss and put Scarborough ahead 21-16. Tyson Kimball, though, returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards, setting up a 9-yard touchdown run by Logan Sevigny.

Sevigny and Carpenter each finished with two TD runs.

MARSHWOOD 45, CHEVERUS 6: Greg Castoras rushed for four touchdowns for the second week in a row, leading the Hawks (6-0) to a Class B South win over the Stags (1-5) in Portland.

Castoras reached the end zone twice on Marshwood’s first six plays. First, he broke free for a 51-yard touchdown. Then, after a 69-yard run by Jack O’Brien, Castoras went in from the 3 and added a 2-point conversion to make it 14-0.

Marshwood, ranked No. 4 in the Varsity Maine Top 10, extended its lead to 28-0 in the second quarter. Parker Ferrer caught a 5-yard TD pass from Michael Sbrizza, and Castoras plunged in from the 1 for his third touchdown.

Cheverus, meanwhile, was held without a first down in the first half. The Stags used a bit of trickery to score on the opening possession of the second half, as Jackson Holmes caught a short pass from Colton Jewett and flipped the ball to Kevin True, who went the distance for a 45-yard touchdown.

Castoras quickly answered with a 50-yard run. Then, after Cheverus forced a Marshwood fumble just outside its own goal line, Jewett was tackled in the end zone for a safety that made it 38-6.

The final TD was a 1-yard run by Jon Buttrick early in the fourth quarter.
