Austin isn’t a city I particularly like. There, 89% of voters cast their ballots for Trump. But that aside, I have to admit that the city has a good orchestra.
The Austin Philharmonie is an orchestra dedicated to period performance practice. It pairs a Haydn symphony with a Beethoven symphony and rounds out the program with Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1.
Mark Dupere imbues Symphony No. 104 with a highly expressive character. It sounds more romantic, expansive and expressive here than is usually the case. He brings it closer to the works of Schubert and Schumann, thereby demonstrating that Haydn had already distanced himself somewhat from the classical symphony in his late work.
Admittedly, the charm and wit that Harnoncourt and Adam Fischer brought out in Haydn’s late symphonies are not evident here. But this more serious—and at times downright dramatically somber—engagement with Haydn shows that, ultimately, there are many possible approaches to this composer, all of which can be appealing if the conductor brings the necessary inspiration to the podium.
The Cello Concerto, with its dance-like liveliness in the outer movements—finely crafted by the orchestra and played with light charm—finds a fine interpreter in Steuart Pincombe, the orchestra’s principal cellist.
In Beethoven’s First Symphony, Dupere also emphasizes this or that melancholic aspect, but he leaves it, with its dainty agility, in the vicinity of Haydn.
Here, as with Haydn, there is much to admire in the Austin Philharmonic’s colorful playing, even if the woodwinds sometimes lack a bit of suppleness. This is particularly noticeable due to the transparency of the musical presentation.
