Connecting phone to full fibre

Full fibre installed  yesterday. The engineer told us to plug the telephone line into the router when the old line went dead., The telephone line will not fit in the router plug he told us to use. It will fit in the next socket which is marked 'Tel'. If this is connected, we get a dialing tone but cannot make or receive calls.
