Imagine for a moment that the modding community has once again managed to achieve something that should not be so easy: getting AMD‘s FSR 4.1 to work on an Intel Arc graphics card.
Thanks to the OptiScaler project, some users have managed to run AMD’s FSR 4.1 on Intel Arc graphics cards. The most interesting part is not just that it works, but how it works. Instead of relying on the GPU’s raw power, the mod directly uses Intel’s XMX units, which are the AI accelerators built into its graphics cards.
Using a lighter version known as FSR 4.1.2 Lite, the system can run at the same speed as Intel’s native upscaling technology, XeSS. What is surprising is that some of the first users who have tested it claim that the resulting image quality looks noticeably better and sharper than Intel’s official solution.
Of course, there are some things to keep in mind. This is entirely the work of modders and not an official project from AMD. Officially, FSR 4 remains exclusive to AMD hardware, and since this is a community project, compatibility with all games is still not perfect or guaranteed.
This clearly shows that AMD’s AI upscaling models can also run on competing graphics cards. Although AMD is unlikely to officially make FSR available to everyone anytime soon, this mod gives Intel users an excellent alternative, especially in games that do not include XeSS support. Intel’s upscaling technology usually works very well and is open, meaning it can also run on graphics cards from other manufacturers.
At the end of the day, projects like this show that the community always finds a way to get the most out of existing hardware and overcome limitations.
