Over the last 9 months I've been absolutely bingeing Deltarune in my gaming hours. Undertale ended up becoming a very personal game for me and Deltarune is shaping up similarly!
I wanted to take a solid, best-of-abilities and technical skills crack at turning Black Knife into something seriously heavy and high energy for the dancefloor. The screams always reminded me of the energy blasts in the demoscene demo Universal Sequence, which happens to have one of my favourite neuro/breakcore DnB songs of all time in it.
The plan was to create something that devolved from a fairly sensibly put together song into an apocalyptic world ending piece of chaos.
The first part of this was developing a sound and set of breaks in the piano roll with the Kong drum kit that I could chop and switch between. Once I had that, I brought in the new Humana choir tool and a stack of Reese bass synths. Over time I realised I also wanted to switch up to 4x4 acid style vibes, which. . . Yeah, that added some challenge to the process.
This is the most complex song I've created, sound design wise, and the basses all have a boatload of work done to make them sound cohesive, especially in the last section.
The church bell was a late addition but it defined a bunch of the track and caused me to go back and change a bunch of things - but the upside is it now shakes the walls fairly comprehensively at home!
Highly recommend listening to this on good headphones or ideally a system with a big subwoofer.
Oh, and that proceed sample? That's me. Inspired by the Weird Route ending of Deltarune chapter 5.
This is the first song I've produced where the Yamaha Tone Generator *doesnt* feature at all.
All instruments, processing and mixing done in Reason 13:
- Humana Vocal Ensemble for the choir
- Europa FM Synth for all basses and leads (either custom patches or heavily modified presets)
- Kong Drum Designer for all drum samples
Games & Sources
I've used the melody and bassline from Black Knife, and done my best to emulate the chaos breaks from Universal Sequence as well as interpretating the "roar" in Black Knife to be similar to the energy blast vibes from Universal Sequence.
Beyond that its mostly a rearrangement of Black Knife, with not much in the way of additional melodies.
Primary source: Undertale "Black Knife" (Toby Fox)
Secondary reference:
Conspiracy - Universal Sequence (Demoscene, music title: Unintended Consequences)
