Massport broke ground Tuesday on a second remote terminal serving Logan Airport, following the success of a pilot program launched this spring.

The first-of-its-kind remote terminal in Framingham opened June 1 and served 10,000 passengers in the first two months, according to Massport. The service has been extended through March 2027.

The new South Shore remote terminal will be built at the Braintree Logan Express (LEX) location on Forbes Road, across from South Shore Plaza. The project will also include two multilevel parking garages.

“This program not only helps ease the stress of traveling, but also removes private vehicles from the roads, reducing congestion and emissions,” Massport said in a statement.

The service allows travelers to pass through TSA security at the remote terminal before boarding a bus that takes them directly to the post-security side of Logan Airport. The cost is $9 each way, and the service is offered between 5:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Currently only passengers flying JetBlue and Delta Air Lines can use it.

“We couldn’t be happier with the success of the Remote Terminal over the last two months,” Rich Davey, CEO of Massport, said in July. “Passengers have been loving the convenience of the service, not stressing about trying to drive into Boston and getting to ride on the airfield next to planes.”

Representatives from airports in Philadelphia and Washington have visited Framingham to see the remote terminal in action, Davey recently told members of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, according to The Boston Globe.

“This project marks an exciting milestone in Massport’s efforts to make getting to and from the airport easier and more seamless for travelers,” Massport said in a statement.
