FLIGHT International, 8 December 1979 stage, in order to diffuse their thrust into its. tank-wall structure. Cost of the preparatory phase of Ariane 3 development is put at roughly £175 million. About 65 per cent of this would b e absorbed by strap-on booster development, the remainder being used for third-stage modification and Ariane 3 studies. The preparatory phase is due to end in February 1980, by which time ESA members should have decided upon a go-ahead for Arianes 2 and 3. Full-scale development of Ariane 3 is expected to cost at least a further £30 million. It is expected to make its first flight during 1983. The development budgets are likely to be spread in, keeping with ESA's policy of distributing work according to a country's contributions. Italy will thus contribute a fair proportion toward Ariane 3 because SNIA Viscosa will develop the rocket boosters. One of the options ONES is studying from Ariane 2 onward is recovery and recuse of the first stage. Preliminary studies suggest that this is practical and further work is now needed to prove the concept. Firststage recovery is attractive from an economic point of view because it accounts for roughly 40 per cent of the cost of an Ariane. ONES currently envisages the use of parachutes to brake the first stage's fall into the Atlantic Ocean. The stage would then be returned to Europe for refurbishment. The amount of protection needed for the stage would depend on the method of recovery. The engines, for example, could probably be used again after very little refurbishment, provided they spent no more than a few hours in the sea. This would require a recovery ship capable of lifting the stage out of the sea for a washdown with fresh water. Stainless steel is used for the first-stage tanks so they are not prone to corrosion and 1915 Ariane first stage thrust frame and the four Viking Vs that power it during preparation for a test firing. Engine manufacturer, Societe Europeenne de Propulsion, plans to develop more powerful versions of Viking for future Arianes by increasing combustion chamber pressure. Other propulsion system improvements include longer first and third stages, plus the use of strap-on solid propellant boosters other structures could probably be protected by paint. ONES plans to conduct drop tests during 1980, using the first stage left over from the propellant mockup and a crane. A decision on the practicability of first-stage recovery is expected by the end of 1980. So far, Arianes 2 and 3 are the only future versions which have been presented to ESA member states for approval. ONES has, however, carried out in J house studies for what comes next, namely Ariane 4 and 5. Both versions are designed to cope with heavier payloads and thus reduce the cost/kg of placing satellites in orbit. Ariane 4 is seen as an intermediate step between Arianes 3 and 5. The principal difference between Ariane 3 and Ariane 4 is a lengthening of the first stage by up to 6m. The increase in length allows the stage to carry 200 to 210 tonnes of propellants, compared to 145 tonnes on the present Ariane, An important consequence of the longer first stage is that a new launch pad is needed. It is not practical to modify the existing pad and even if this were possible, alterations would place it out of commission for at least a year. In addition to the longer first stage, Ariane 4 would have at least two more strap-on rocket boosters, making a total of four. Several other options are also under study including: stretching of the second stage to carry 40 tonnes of propellant (it holds 33 tonnes at present), increasing the number of rocket boosters to six or eight or making the existing four bigger, and adopting an even larger fairing diameter. CNES estimates that it will take between £20 million and £55 million to develop Ariane 4 from Ariane 3. Ariane 5 is the largest version foreseen by CNES at present and features a second stage using liquid hydrogen and oxygen, for which a new engine would have to be developed-. Secondstage propellant mass would be 40 to 45 tonnes and it would have the same, or a larger, diameter than the first stage, which is the lengthened version employed on Ariane 4. Ariane 5's third stage would retain the engine developed for Ariane 2. The stage, however, would be redesigned to include a different fuel tank Ariane propellant mockup on the pad in Kourou, French Guiana.
